Susan Adams
Director of Human Resources
I began my career at Heritage in December 1999, initially starting in the accounting department before transitioning to the Human Resources department a few months later.
Director or Human Resources
I believe that great leaders possess traits such as empathy because understanding and caring for others creates a supportive environment. This trait, along with being honest, ethical, and trustworthy are essential to building trust and respect within a team. Additionally, the ability to develop team members while providing a clear vision that others may not yet see also complements or contributes to making a leader great and inspiring.
I would say one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is staying updated with constantly evolving laws, regulations, and best practices. Keeping up with these fast-evolving compliance requirements and HR trends can be a demanding task, requiring continuous learning and development. Though challenges can feel daunting, it’s important to recognize it is worth facing. It’s not just a professional challenge but a personal one, as staying informed for the organization and employees is essential, so is self-development. My big challenges drive my journey of growth and improvement.
I am fortunate to have several female mentors and coworkers whom I greatly admire and look up to. Their wisdom, support and guidance have had a profound impact on me professionally and personally. Their insights and experiences help me navigate challenges to move in the right direction. But also, the encouragement they provide boosts my confidence and motivation, empowering me to not only achieve my goals but to strive to exceed expectations.
Do you have any tips, strategies you’ve employed, or lessons learned throughout your career that you would like to share with aspiring female professionals?
One valuable lesson I’ve embraced is stepping out your comfort zone and building a community and friendship with peers, and accountability partners. Surround yourself with individuals who enhance your self-awareness, call you out when you’re wrong and celebrate you when you win. Create your strong support network!
